Bangladesh government lodged thousands of false and fraudulent cases against its dissidents and its newly appointed politically motivated judges sentenced 22 political leaders of the opposition party, the Awami League (AL), the nation’s largest and oldest party that was successful to achieve its independence in 1971 and more importantly, under the successful leadership of its leader Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh graduated from a least developed country (LDC) into a developing country.
Under her leadership, its GDP growth rate maintained over 6.8% percent on average for nearly 18 years and at the same time it reduced poverty more than half from 42% in 2006 to 18% in 2023. Sheikh Hasina dramatically improved its economy and she is known as the Margaret Thatcher of England because of her strong personality.
In August 21, 2004, the current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman tried to kill her and her top associates in a massive grenade and bomb attack on her anti-terrorism rally in which 24 of her leaders killed and 370 were wounded, many maimed for life. But she luckily escaped death. In 1975, when her parents plus 16 close family members including Prime Minister Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, her father and the founder of the country were killed, she escaped death as she was abroad.
She was overthrown on 5 August 2024 and since then all the convicted killers and terrorists have been released from jails. With the help of the nation’s army, political leaders have been arrested and “death sentences” have been handed down to 22 of them including on Sheikh Hasina in a kangaroo court. Reportedly 21 attempts were made on her life at various times but luckily she escaped death all the time.
Critics believe that 129 AL leaders have been killed inside prisons due to excessive torture, abuse and food poisoning. The Human Rights Watch however mentioned 10 deaths inside prisons.
Bangladesh nationals appealed to the UN Secretary General to send a team of experts to investigate ill treatment that are meted out to the dissents and death inside government custody.
In any case, Bangladesh judiciary has become a killing machine, an instrument of intimidation, extortion and corruption. Currently few hundreds are in the death row in Bangladesh due to its politically motivated judges and the judiciary.
