India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, has paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The meeting took place at 11am on Monday at the prime minister’s office in the Secretariat, said Jahidul Islam Rony, deputy press secretary to the prime minister.

“The Indian high commissioner met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman,” Rony said.

“It was a courtesy meeting, and they discussed bilateral relations between the two countries.”

It was Trivedi’s first meeting with the prime minister.

Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and the prime minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir were present at the meeting.

The Indian government appointed Trivedi as its 16th high commissioner to Bangladesh in April. The Indian government also granted him equivalent status of a union cabinet minister for ceremonial functions. He presented his credentials to then president Mohammed Shahabuddin on Jun 25.

On Jul 29, Trivedi met Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed.

Trivedi arrived in Dhaka on Jun 5, travelling by land across the border through West Bengal.

Before Trivedi, India’s high commissioner to Bangladesh was Pranay Verma. He is now India’s ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
