BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman says the upcoming general election is “extremely important” in establishing a safe and democratic Bangladesh. His remarks came on Sunday (January 18) afternoon while speaking at a meeting with the families of those killed and seriously injured in the July Mass Uprising.

He said, “What was the objective of those who were martyred and injured in the mass uprising – those who defying the bloodthirsty eyes of fascism? Their objective was to build a self-reliant, safe, and democratic Bangladesh. To establish such a safe, democratic Bangladesh, the next national election is extremely, extremely, extremely important.”

“If we fail to establish a safe democratic Bangladesh in the coming days, this saga of mourning and grief will continue. But instead of mourning assemblies or tales of sorrow, let us—the democracy-loving people—write the story of democracy’s victory in tomorrow’s Bangladesh, by the grace of Allah.”

Tarique said the state had a responsibility towards those injured and killed in the prolonged anti-fascist movements over the past decade and a half, including the 2024 July Uprising. “As a responsible party, BNP recognises that responsibility,” he said.

“If the people’s verdict entrusts the BNP with the responsibility of running the country, then gradually we will fulfil that responsibility, that commitment, and that promise before you and before the people of the country, Inshallah.”

BNP organized the meeting at the auditorium of the Krishibid Institution in Farmgate, bringing together the families of those killed and seriously injured in the July Uprising. Tairque’s wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, sat alongside the families of the martyrs as a guest.

As family members of the martyrs spoke emotionally about their pain and suffering, a sombre and poignant atmosphere prevailed throughout the venue.

Tarique Rahman said, “The movement of 2024 did not belong to any individual, party, or group. The movement was truly a mass uprising of deprived, democracy-seeking people.”

“That is why I say 1971 was about achieving independence, while the 2024 movement was about safeguarding the independence of the country and its people. Therefore, if 2024 is to be consolidated, it is essential to ensure the political and economic liberty of every man and woman and every citizen of the country.”
